After 180 combined hours of volunteering and eight months of preparation, my vision for a sturdy, functional shed extension for the Stamford Animal Care and Control Center came true. Whether I was meeting with architects to design construction plans or writing up the formal proposal for council approval or leading and instructing two dozen volunteers, my multistep Eagle Project offered me great opportunities to improve my leadership and organizational skills. Not only will my project directly help the Center and the animals who find shelter there, but I hope that, by assisting with the construction, the younger scouts in my troop will be galvanized to leave their own mark on our troop by taking similar leadership roles.
As a tutor for over 100 hours for the English Language Learners (ELL) Academy, I worked one-on-one with newly-immigrated students to improve their English conversational skills and help them adjust to their new educational environment. I wanted to make immigrants feel welcomed as valuable new members of my high school’s community. Some students knew very little English when I first met them, but after many tutoring sessions, I am now confident that everyone can succeed in their school community if they are given the chance.
