When I was a student senator and Chair of Student
Government’s Community Service and Outreach Committee at Harper College, I organized a fundraiser dedicated to the people of Yemen. This has been a passion project of mine and a dream come true. Not only did we plan to send proceeds to Yemen, but we also wanted to bring
our community together and help make a difference and bring hope to people in
Yemen.
I was raised to be an outspoken person and have always stood against injustice. I believe, having a clear conscience is the biggest treasure in the world. I have always encouraged being courageous and following not the popular but the right path.
The news, social media and images of Yemen have alarmed me. Yemen civil war has killed thousands including women and children, who are the most vulnerable victims of the crisis. Yemen required urgent action and I felt responsible to take that action. I had no doubt that the world should no longer be an audience to the war but rather should end the war. Changes needed to happen, and it had to start somewhere whether small or big, early or late.
It has finally occurred to me that, I no longer had to wait for that somebody to do the right thing when I could do it myself.
I have gathered our Harper community to work and strive for a good cause: help Yemen.
It was amazing to see us, the young people to come together and put our best efforts to not only raise awareness about the political conflict, civil war and poverty in Yemen, but to also raise funds.
It was important and urgent to let people know and inform about the war in Yemen, worst humanitarian crisis in the world for the past century.
During the process of marketing and promoting for our event, we have realized that ignorance has taken a toll in our country. Young generation seemed to be unaware of the global issues and many of which did not even know about the existence or the country Yemen.
Our hard work and dedication have come to fruition. The event was sponsored by our student government association SGA and each and every member has put their heart and soul into this event. Hope for Yemen took place on Friday, May 3rd from 7 to 9 pm in J theatre. We sold 98 tickets, each for $7,and have gathered around $800 including the donations in total. Our aim was to not only raise awareness about the worst current humanitarian crisis in the world, but to also help bring hope to children in Yemen by gathering donations for this cause.
